SANITATION DEPARTMENT NARRATIVE

The Sanitation Department is comprised of 19 full time employees in four sections:
Landfill Operations, Solid Waste, Recycling, and Mosquito Control. The Landfill Operations section includes the Class I Landfill (for residential garbage), the Class III Landfill (for construction debris, white goods, furniture, yard trash, etc.), long term care and maintenance for three closed landfills, a waste tire facility, and two solid waste recycling facilities. The Solid Waste section provides transport for waste and recyclable materials collected at the solid waste recycling centers, as well as recyclable materials from two other collection sites, and maintenance of eight waste oil sites. The Recycling section tracks and reports all recyclables collected in the County. The Mosquito Control section’s activities include mosquito surveillance (trapping, quantifying, and identifying mosquitoes), nighttime spraying (seasonal), and daytime larvaciding.

LANDFILL, SOLID WASTE, AND RECYCLING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

1. What are the operating hours of the Central Landfill and Huntington and Interlachen Solid Waste/Recycling Centers?

Central Landfill:
Monday through Saturday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Huntington and Interlachen Solid Waste/Recycling Centers:
Monday through Saturday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

 

2. What type of waste is accepted at these facilities?

Central Landfill:
Household garbage, construction/demolition debris, yard trash, commercial/industrial waste, waste tires, lead acid batteries, waste oil and recyclables. Hazardous, medical, and bulk liquids are not accepted.

Huntington and Interlachen Solid Waste/Recycling Centers:
Construction/demolition debris, yard trash, recyclables, waste oil, lead acid batteries and waste tires from homeowners (5 maximum per year).

 

3. What waste will be picked up at curbside?

Waste Management is under contract with Putnam County Government to collect household garbage and yard trash from the unincorporated areas, Interlachen, Welaka, and Pomona Park.

They also collect recyclables from the unincorporated areas, Interlachen, Welaka, Pomona Park, Crescent City, and the City of Palatka.

Recyclables include: plastic bottles, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, corrugated cardboard, aluminum cans, bi-metal cans, and aerosol cans.

 

4. What are the schedules for  waste  collection?

Household garbage is picked up once per week.  Yard trash is picked up once every other week. Recyclables are picked up once every other week.

 

5. Who do I call to find out my collection days or other information on collection?

6. Where are the recycling collection sites and what do they accept?

Central Landfill of Palatka accepts oil, paint, tires, batteries, aluminum, steel, and aerosol cans, plastic and glass food and drink containers, and newspaper. Huntington Solid Waste/Recycling Center of Crescent City and the Interlachen Solid Waste/Recycling Center of Interlachen both accept oil, paint, tires, batteries, aluminum, steel, and aerosol cans, and plastic and glass food and drink containers. The East Palatka ball field recycling collection site accepts oil, aluminum, steel, and aerosol cans, and plastic and glass food and drink containers. The recycling collection sites at the Kay Larkin Airport of Palatka, the City Lot of Welaka, Chiappini’s Gas Station of Melrose, and Long’s Garage of Pomona Park all accept oil.

 

7. What services are offered for Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?

Residential HHW materials can be brought to the Central Landfill, the Huntington Solid Waste/Recycling Center, and the Interlachen Solid Waste/Recycling Center between the hours of 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This service is available to residents of Putnam County and the following materials are accepted: Used Motor Oil, Used Oil Filters, Antifreeze, Batteries, Waste Tires, Transmission Fluid, Brake Fluid, Fluorescent Light Bulbs, Paint, Pesticides, Insecticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, Fertilizers, Household Cleaners, Solvents, Degreasers, Adhesives, Gasoline and Unwanted Fuels, Pool Chemicals, Paint Thinners, Mercury Containing Items, Unwanted or Outdated Medications, and Smoke Detectors. MOSQUITO CONTROL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How do we get sprayed for mosquitoes?

Call the Putnam County Mosquito Control Office at 329-0397 and request spraying.

2. Do you spray for black flies?

Yes, on an as needed basis. Call the Putnam County Mosquito Control Office at 329-0397.

3. What can be done about standing water?

Call the Putnam County Mosquito Control office at 329-0397 and report the standing water. The area will be inspected/surveyed for mosquito breeding by a Pesticide Technician.
