Emergency Management
The Emergency Management was established to provide a coordinated and rapid response to
natural or technological emergencies and coordinate a rapid recovery. Our primary mission
is to protect property and save lives. We do this through an 'all hazards' approach to
disaster management that integrates the available resources of county, municipal, or other
agencies. While the most obvious threat to Putnam County is from weather related events,
we must be prepared to meet the challenges of other emergencies such as hazardous
materials releases, wildfires, civil unrest, terrorism, and other emergencies as they
arise.

Eight
2. Who staffs shelters?
Red Cross Volunteers and Ham Radio Operators.
3. How do I find out if shelters are open?
NOAA Weather Radio; Local radio and TV stations.
4. How can I be prepared for an emergency?
Have a family emergency preparedness plan to include emergency supplies, emergency
meeting place, items to secure home.
5. If told to evacuate, where do I go?
Go to a friend or family member's home that is capable of withstanding storm force
winds or to a designated shelter.
6. Who do I call if I have other questions re emergency management or disaster
preparedness?

E-911 Addressing
The E-911 Addressing Division is responsible for mapping and identifying roads and
assigning addresses to residences and businesses in the unincorporated areas of Putnam
County. The E is for Enhanced which separates the present 911 system from the 911 systems
of the past. The assigned addresses allows the communications center to receive the
calling location and dispatch the proper response personnel.
1. How is 911 Funded?
The .55 cents surcharge on each telephone line funds the 911 office and the 911
communications equipment.
2. How do I get my 911 address?
Call 386/329-0381 with the parcel number or the property owner's name.
3. Where do I post my number?
In a place visible from the street. This assures that emergency responders can
locate you.
4. When can I use my 911 address for mail service?
When notified by postal service.

VOLUNTEER Fire Service
The Putnam County Volunteer Fire Service is comprised of eighteen (18) chartered
volunteer fire departments funded partially by county fire tax funds and partially by
private donations. Equipment and supplies are purchased by county purchase order from each
department's allocated funds. Vehicle and personnel insurance is also funded by the county
fire tax, along with training programs and infection control.
1. What are the requirements for a volunteer firefighter?
A desire to help your community; apply to your district fire department; pass a
physical; and a willingness to train (provided by Putnam County).
2. How old must I be to become a firefighter?
18 years
3. Will I be insured?
Yes, Death & Dismemberment and Worker's Comp.
4. What if I can't pass the physical?
Support personnel is always needed.
5. Can I drive the truck?
After passing the EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) and
approval by the Department Chief.
