LIBRARY DEPARTMENT NARRATIVE

The Putnam County Library System serves the citizens of Putnam County through five facilities. They are located in Palatka, Bostwick, Crescent City, Interlachen, and Melrose. The system is automated, providing Internet access to the Web and a variety of online databases.
Programs for all ages are offered in every location. These may include story-times for children, author visits or travel and classic film programs. Schedules are published regularly and are available in each location or by calling your local library.

Headquarters: 601 College Road, Palatka (Corner of Rt. 20 & College Road, across from Family & Children’s Services).

How do I get a library card?

You must fill out an application, available at any library location.

Do I need identification to apply for a library card?

Yes. You must provide us with a picture ID with your current Putnam County address. We will also accept a non-current picture ID, as long as you can also give us one of the following with your correct address: 1) Florida Voter’s Registration Card. 2) Florida Vehicle Registration. 3) Utilities deposit receipt or address section of the bill. 4) Property deed.

Do I have to live in Putnam County to get a library card.

Not necessarily. We have reciprocal agreements with Alachua, Clay, Marion, St. Johns, and Volusia counties so that our residents can get cards in their counties without paying a nonresident fee. Residents of those counties may also get a card in Putnam County without paying the $25.00 per year nonresident fee.

Are the cards free?

Yes, your first card is free to all Putnam County residents six years of age and older. A fee is charged to replace lost, stolen or misplaced cards. Parents are responsible for all materials checked out on their children’s cards.

How long can I keep materials?

Most materials are checked out for three weeks. Exceptions include best sellers, magazines, reserve items and video tapes. Video tapes circulate for three days, best sellers, magazines and reserves circulate for two weeks.

Can I keep materials after they are due to be returned?

Yes, if no one else is waiting for them. You may renew them by either calling the library or bringing them back to one of our facilities.

Do I have to pay anything if I return my materials late?

Yes, all items not returned by their due date accumulate fines until the day they are returned. Fines on most materials are ten cents per day per item. Fines on best sellers, reserve items, video tapes and interlibrary loans are fifty cents per day.

What happens if I don’t return my materials at all?

We refer you to the Sheriff’s Department.

Can I get materials from other libraries in the system?

Yes, ask one of the library staff to assist you. You may also return materials to any library in the system.

What are some of the collections I can find at the various libraries?

The Library System has developed several collections for your use. These include popular fiction & nonfiction book collections for people of all ages, reference materials to help with your basic information needs, popular and special interest magazines, genealogical materials emphasizing the southeast (Palatka only), and materials related to Florida history and life. Many popular fiction and nonfiction titles are also available in large type or on audio cassettes. We also have circulation collections of non-theatrical video tapes, including Described Videos for visually impaired patrons.
